Who are we?
Virginia 2ND CARES is the tax exempt, non-profit arm of the Iconic Second Jurisdiction of Virginia-COGIC dedicated to lifting up and supporting our community members across the lifespan.
Our organizational aims are to:
- Build up Black Children, Youth and Families
- Strengthen and Empower Black Males
- Support and Protect Black Elders
We are dedicated to programs and activities that focus on Health Equity and the Social Determinants of Health. The Iconic 2nd Jurisdiction of Virginia (COGIC), through 12 Districts and 100 churches has provided spiritual, physical, and emotional support to over 20,000 residents in communities across the State of Virginia, since 1959. The VA 2ND team has successfully managed multiple large-scale youth intervention projects in multiple regions across the U.S.
Virginia 2ND CARES, Inc. (VA 2ND), a faith-based non-profit with pending 501(c)3 tax-exempt status will focus on six under-resourced and vulnerable cities in Hampton Roads, Virginia where we have a mature and long history with church youth ministries dedicated to edifying and serving children, youth and families. Most of the churches in the jurisdiction have prior successes within the communities they serve, their concern and empathy for the plight of African American children and families in their respective cities, and their commitment to assuring the successful pathway to and through adulthood of African American children. The precise physical locations of our project and the boundaries of the areas we will serve are Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Hampton Roads is the name of a body of water in the United States that serves as a wide channel for the James, Nansemond, and Elizabeth Rivers where the Chesapeake Bay flows into the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding metropolitan region located in southeastern Virginia. The region has a population of 1.8 million and is home to numerous military installments and corporate headquarters.
